Netflix is reuniting with the creative team behind its record-breaking documentary Harry & Meghan to tackle another polarizing family empire. Dynasty: The Murdochs, a new limited series offering an unprecedented look at Rupert Murdoch and his children, has been announced and is just around the corner. Here is everything we know so far.
If you have been missing the cutthroat family politics of HBO’s Succession, Netflix is preparing to serve up the real-life inspiration. The streamer has officially announced Dynasty: The Murdochs, a forensic deep-dive into the family that controls a massive global media empire.
The project hails from Story Syndicate, the production powerhouse that has become a staple partner for Netflix. They are best known for producing the massive hit Harry & Meghan, as well as the critically acclaimed Take Care of Maya and Unknown.
Helming the project is acclaimed director Liz Garbus, a two-time Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner. Garbus will direct all episodes, with Sara Enright serving as co-director on the finale.
What is the plot of Dynasty: The Murdochs?
While Rupert Murdoch has been the subject of countless biographies and news segments, this series promises a distinct edge: access to private communications. The production claims to utilize thousands of pages of documents, emails, and text messages that have never before been seen on television.
The official logline for the series is as follows:
“Dynasty: The Murdochs offers an unprecedented look at one the world’s most powerful families at a crossroads, as its patriarch, Rupert Murdoch, makes one last play to ensure his legacy at all costs.
Drawing on thousands of pages of documents, emails, and text messages that have never before been seen on television, this limited series exposes the private machinations of a family torn apart by power, politics, and a desperate desire for their father’s love.
While Rupert Murdoch has spent over 80 years building an empire that shapes governments and democracies, the series poses the ultimate question: Is a dynasty a family or a business? For the Murdochs, the two have never been separate.”
The series, as evidenced by the screenshots below, features many interviews with experts across the spectrum. Among those we were able to spot are journalists and authors like NPR’s David Folkenflik, Puck’s Matthew Belloni, The NY Times’s Jonathan Mahler, The Media Mix’s Claire Atkinson, Kara Swisher, Walter Marsh, Joyce Purnick, R.G. Belsky, and Paddy Manning, among others.
Who is behind the series? When will it be released?
As mentioned, the series comes from Story Syndicate. This marks another major collaboration between the production company and the streamer.
Liz Garbus serves as the primary director. Her extensive resume includes the Nina Simone documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?, the true-crime hit I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, and the recent sensation Harry & Meghan.
The Executive Producers for the series are:
Sara Enright
Dan Cogan
Liz Garbus
Jon Bardin
Mala Chapple
All 4 episodes will have a runtime of approximately 60 minutes each and premiere on Friday, March 13, 2026.
It’s a blockbuster month for new documentaries on Netflix, with Louis Theroux debuting his first Netflix documentary in front of the camera, plus titles like The Dinosaurs, The TikTok Killer, The Plastic Detox, and a Red Hot Chili Peppers doc (sort of) on the way.
